CAMDEN, N.J. (September 21, 2017) –
Don Norton, Jr. is a prolific writer and the Rutgers University-Camden men's soccer assistant coach has penned another article for the national market.
Norton's article "Diversity in Attack…Attacking from the Flanks" appears in the September/October 2017 issue of the Soccer Journal, the publication of the United Soccer Coaches. His latest article is the 16th he has written for the publication since 2011.
The Soccer Journal was formerly called the NSCAA Journal when the organization was known as the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Shortly after the name change over the summer, Norton wrote an article for the July/August edition of the publication entitled "Training Players on the Spectrum," which highlighted the work of Robert J. (Bob) Cooper, the Director of the Highland Soccer Stars program in Gloucester Township.
Now in his fifth season as an assistant coach at Rutgers-Camden, Norton has over 20 years of experience coaching soccer. His numerous coaching articles, meanwhile, have been published in prominent national and international coaching magazines including Soccer America, Southern Soccer Scene, Soccer New England, and Success in Soccer, in addition to the NSCAA/Soccer Journals.
Norton joined the Rutgers-Camden coaching staff for the 2013 season and immediately helped the Scarlet Raptors compile the finest campaign in program history. The 2013 Scarlet Raptors won the 2013 New Jersey Athletic Conference title and reached the NCAA Division III national championship game. They were a 2014 NJAC finalist and went on to win the ECAC Metro/Upstate championship that season. The 2015 Scarlet Raptors won another NJAC title and advanced to the NCAA tourney, while the 2016 team participated in the ECAC tournament.
Norton also coached at Haverford College, Swarthmore College, Richard Stockton College (now Stockton University), Rowan University and the University of Pennsylvania. He has coached numerous All-Conference, All-Region and All-American players and NSCAA academic award-winning teams.
Norton is a national state coaching school instructor for New Jersey Youth Soccer, Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer Associations and an NSCAA associate national staff coach. He has taught the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) national D, E and F license courses for over 20 years to thousands of professional, college, junior college, high school, club and youth coaches from across the region and country.
Norton served as a Region 1 ODP boys support staff coach at Rider University from 2012-14, working with leading college coaches, club coaches, and state Directors of Coaching to identity elite players from across the region for selection to the Region 1 teams. Players from Region 1 then compete against the other three regions for selection to US national teams.
Norton is the Director of Coaching for the Highland YSC/NJ Rush Soccer Club. He was asked by US Youth Soccer Director of Coaching Sam Snow to speak at the 2014 NSCAA/US Youth Soccer National Convention in Philadelphia. He spoke for an hour to the national and international audience on methods to implement a curriculum in youth soccer clubs.
In 2003 Norton was asked by the Football Association of Ireland to provide player development strategies used in the United States as part of the F.A. Ireland's Development Strategies 2002-2006: One Game, One Association, an outline to improve playing standards at all levels of Irish football over the next five years.
Norton, who has a BA from Gettysburg College and a MA from Rowan University, also has obtained the second-highest coaching license in the world, earning the prestigious FA Ireland "A" License (UEFA "A" License). He also has the Scottish FA "A" Certificate, USSF "A" License, NSCAA Premier Diploma and USSF National Youth License. While earning his Scottish and Irish badges, his instructors and classmates consisted of many of Europe's leading coaches and players from across Europe, including former Scottish national team head coaches Craig Brown and Craig Levein, former Manchester United head coach David Moyes and Irish senior national team head coach Brian Kerr.
