Junior catcher Mackenzie Mason played a huge role in helping the Rutgers-Camden softball team sweep its season-opening New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader at New Jersey City University Sunday. Mason went 4-for-4 with six RBIs in the Raptors’ 7-3 victory in the first game and went 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI as the Raptors rallied for a 3-2 win in eight innings in the nightcap. Her four hits in the opener were one shy of the program’s single-game record and included two-run singles in the second, fourth and seventh innings, while adding a sixth-inning single. The six RBIs were two shy of the program’s single-game mark. In the nightcap, she had a single and added a RBI double in the sixth inning to help the Raptors tie the game at 2-2 on the way to their win. For the day, she hit .750 (6-for-8) and for the week she hit .600 (6-for-10, which included an 0-for-2 game against Catholic University). Mason also had 14 putouts and one assist in 15 chances during the week, hiking her career total to 318 putouts and moving into 10th place on the program’s all-time list. Her big week hiked her season batting average to .306.
