One of the Scarlet Raptors’ five team captains, junior closer Kyle Gaff saved both ends of a season-opening doubleheader against Amherst College Sunday at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. Gaff worked a total of one inning in his two saves, but both times entered the contest with the go-ahead runs on base. In a 5-4 victory in the opener, he took the mound with runners at first and second and two outs in the bottom of the ninth before nailing down the win on a pop out to first base. In a 3-2 victory in the seven-inning second game, Gaff inherited a bases-loaded, one-out situation in the final frame. He forced the potential tying run at the plate on a comebacker to the mound and then ended the contest on a grounder to third base. In his first year of collegiate pitching last season, Gaff had five saves, a 1.96 ERA and was named to the New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association Div. II/III Third Team All-State.
