Box Score MADISON, N.J. (Aug. 31, 2013) – The Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham women's soccer team scored one goal in each half and went on to defeat Rutgers University-Camden, 2-1, in the first game of its season-opening FDU Fall Classic on a hot and humid afternoon here Saturday.
The Devils (1-0) received an early goal from senior midfielder
Claire Donohue (Red Bank, NJ/Red Bank Regional) and a second-half strike from senior forward
Jennifer DiGioia (Sucasunna, NJ/Roxbury).Rutgers-Camden's first goal of the season was scored by junior midfielder
Lacey Stackhouse (Burlington, NJ/Burlington Township), cutting the Raptors' deficit to 2-1 early in the second half. It was assisted by junior midfielder
Rebecca Gougher (Galloway, NJ/Absegami).Donohue put the Devils on the board only 3:57 into the season, launching a high 25-yard blast over the head of Rutgers-Camden senior goalie
Lauren West (Mantua, NJ/Clearview Regional). West made five saves in the opening half as FDU-Florham held an 11-1 advantage in shots over the first 45 minutes.
Only 1:17 into the second half, West charged out of the net in an attempt to break up a FDU-Florham attack. DiGioia was able to work past her and found an open net, making it a 2-0 game.
Stackhouse scored in a similar manner only 5:25 later, racing Devils freshman keeper
Annie George (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls) to the ball as she was charging out of the net. Stackhouse won the race and scored over the sliding George.
George finished with one save for the Devils, coming on a first-half shot by senior midfielder
Sarah Kooistra (Mantua, NJ/Clearview Regional). West had six saves and allowed two goals for the Raptors before being injured in a second-half collision and replaced by senior
Leighanna Milby (Blackwood, NJ/Highland Regional). Milby finished with three saves.
FDU-Florham held an 18-2 advantage in shots and a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
The Scarlet Raptors return to action Sunday at the FDU Fall Classic, facing St. Joseph's College-Long Island at 2:30 p.m.
