Alvernia blanks Rutgers-Camden women, 2-0

READING, Penn. – Sophomore midfielder Taylor Smith (Jonestown, PA/Northern Lebanon) collected a goal and an assist to power the Alvernia University women's soccer team over Rutgers University-Camden, 2-0, here Saturday.
 
The victory lifts the Crusaders to 4-3, while the Scarlet Raptors fall to 2-4.
 
Alvernia scored the only goal it needed late in the first half when sophomore forward Taylor Landis (Watsontown, PA/Warrior Run) scored off the rebound of a Smith shot, following a flurry of shots. She scored with 10:05 remaining in the half.
 
The Crusaders added an insurance goal at 76:17 when Smith scored unassisted.
 
Alvernia out-shot Rutgers-Camden, 9-6, and held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks. For the Scarlet Raptors, junior defender Kelsey Tierney (Galloway, NJ/Absegami) had two of the shots, putting both on goal to account for half of the Rutgers-Camden shots on goal.
 
Alvernia freshman goalie Jessica Plunkett (Leola, PA/Conestoga Valley) made nine saves to notch the shutout. Raptor freshman keeper Katie Gurba (Westampton, NJ/Holy Cross) had five saves, including four in the opening half.
 
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Wednesday when it travels to Chestertown, Maryland to play a non-conference game at 4:30 p.m. against Washington College.
