MONTCLAIR, N.J. (Oct. 21, 2023) – Throughout most of their New Jersey Athletic Conference game here Saturday, the Rutgers University-Camden women's soccer team frustrated one of the top teams in the country.
In the 78th minute, however, 14th-ranked Montclair State University finally broke a scoreless deadlock and the Red Hawks went on to post a 1-0 victory over the Scarlet Raptors in NJAC action.
Montclair State improves to 11-2-2 overall and 5-1-2 in conference play, while Rutgers-Camden falls to 8-7-1 and 4-4.
The Red Hawks finished with advantages of 18-5 in shots and 11-1 in corner kicks, but were kept off the board by the strong play of Raptor senior goalie
Kayla McKeever, who finished with seven saves. The one shot that snuck through, however, came at 77:56 as senior midfielder Aileen Cahill scored her eighth goal of the season, assisted by freshman midfielder Shannon Mullins and freshman back Lyneth Restrepo.
Graduate student goalie Haley Martin didn't need to make a save to earn the shutout for the Red Hawks.
The Scarlet Raptors close the regular season Wednesday when they host The College of New Jersey at 7 p.m. The Lions are currently ranked #10 nationally.
