CAMDEN, N.J. – Long-time Rutgers University-Camden athlete and administrator Tom Thomasson has been named the Director of Athletics and Recreation. Thomasson had been serving as Rutgers-Camden's Acting Director of Athletics since February of 2024.

Over the years, Thomasson has been involved with numerous initiatives on the Rutgers-Camden campus, including the renovation of the Athletic and Fitness Center, the launch of the campus recreation program and the upgrade of the athletic web site. Thomasson currently serves as chair of the New Jersey Athletic Conference committees for cross country and indoor track and field and previously served as chair of the NCAA Cross Country and Track and Field Championship Committee.

Thomasson earned the first NJAC team title under his watch when the Scarlet Raptors captured the conference baseball title on May 9, 2025. A week earlier, Jacob Dinerman gave Thomasson an individual NJAC First Team title in outdoor track, winning the 1,500-meter run. During his administrative tenure at Rutgers-Camden, Thomasson also saw the 2013 men's soccer team reach the NCAA finals and watched a pair of Scarlet Raptors capture two NCAA outdoor track championships apiece, with Tim VanLiew winning the 2012 and 2013 javelin championship and Jude Misko capturing NCAA titles in the hammer in 2021 and 2022.

During his undergraduate career at Rutgers-Camden, Thomasson was a student-athlete with the cross country and track programs, setting 13 program records and earning honors as the school's Most Outstanding Athlete in 1999. Thomasson was a four-time team MVP in cross country, a two-time MVP with the track program and served as a team captain in both sports. He was the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Region Champion at 10,000 meters in 1999.

Thomasson graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Wellness Studies from Rutgers-Camden in 1999 and served four seasons as an assistant coach with both programs, working with many All-New Jersey Athletic Conference athletes as well as multiple All-Americans.

Thomasson received his Master's degree in Higher Education from Rowan University in 2004 and served as the Assistant Director of Widener University's Wellness Center from 2005-2007 before returning to Rutgers-Camden as the Assistant Director of Athletics and Recreation. He was promoted in July, 2011 to the position of Associate Director of Athletics and Recreational Services.

Thomasson and his wife Lauren live in West Deptford, with their children Tommy and Talia.
