WAYNE, N.J. – On a weekend when the clocks turned back to gain an extra hour, the Rutgers-Camden women's soccer team needed just a few extra minutes as the Scarlet Raptors (9-5-3) defeated Montclair State (12-4-2) 1-0 in the NJAC quarterfinal on Saturday.
The win propelled RUC into the NJAC semifinals, to be played on Wednesday at second-seeded TCNJ. This is the first time since 2022 that the Scarlet Raptors will play in the semifinals.
Gianna Simon scored the game-winner on a pass from Talia Thomasson just 6:18 into the first overtime, the only shot on goal in the extra frame. Rutgers-Camden was outshot 10-5 in regulation, but Giselle Lizardi kept RUC in it with two saves. Both saves came in the second half.
In the first half, the Scarlet Raptors had a chance to score right before halftime, but Montclair's Mackenzie Sibello stopped a shot by Ava Yates with just 3:18 left.
Montclair – seeded third in the tournament – had two shots in the span of 38 seconds in the 58th minute from Kayle Lauber, but both were saved by Lizardi.
Asia Horne had a shot for RUC in the 88th minute, but Sibello saved it again.
Rutgers-Camden became the lowest seed to win a tournament game since Kean defeated Stockton in 2018. Kean was the sixth seed then.
