Deleon sets program outdoor high jump mark at Osprey Open

GALLOWAY, N.J. (April 4, 2026) – Freshman Jayden Deleon broke the Rutgers University-Camden record for the men's high jump in his first meet of the outdoor season and both Deleon and freshman Asha Pensa Johnson won their competitions in the high jump and discus, respectively, as the Scarlet Raptors competed on the final day of the Osprey Open here Saturday.
 
Deleon, who set the Rutgers-Camden indoor high jump record with a 2.09-meter jump over the winter, had a jump of 2.01 meters at the Osprey Open to beat the old mark of 1.96 meters, set by Ken Wise at the 2010 ECAC Championships. Deleon finished first of 13 high jumpers, while freshman Abdulbasit Shodolu finished third (1.81 meters).
 
Pensa Johnson beat a field of 31 athletes in the discus with a throw of 39.72 meters, close to her own program mark of 39.84 meters set at the Stockton Invitational on March 21. Senior Kayla Franklin, meanwhile, finished 16th in the discus (27.23 meters) and was fourth of 27 in the shot put (11.11 meters). Pensa Johnson finished eighth in the shot put (10.81 meters).
 
The Scarlet Raptors also had a pair of second-place finishes as freshman Kamari Brown placed second of 44 athletes in the 200-meter dash (22.02), while senior Jamir Driggins was second of eight athletes in the 110-meter hurdles (15.41). Brown also finished fifth of 46 athletes in the 100-meter dash (11.02).
 
Junior Dyheim Watson led the throwers for the men, finishing ninth of 33 in the shot put (11.75 meters) and fifth of 33 in the discus (37.79 meters). Freshman Muhammad Elijah Samad-Muhammad finished eighth in the discus (32.05 meters).
 
In the 17-man field of the 400-meter dash, freshman Oluwatobi Popoola placed seventh (53.69) and freshman Joseph Simone was eighth (53.83), while freshman Dylan Davies finished fifth of 12 athletes in the men's 5,000 meters (17:19.63). Simone also was 11th of 17 athletes at 800 meters (2:09.24), while Popoola was 10th in the 200-meter dash (23.24).
 
On the women's side, freshman Talia Thomasson placed fourth of seven in the 400 hurdles (1:10.99), sixth of 10 in the 100 hurdles (17.58) and eighth of 13 in the long jump (4.41 meters). Freshman Sofia Tabet finished 14th of 32 in the 100-meter dash (13.73) and 18th of 40 in the 200-meter dash (29.40). Both Thomasson and Tabet joined freshman Shania Bernard and senior Sophia LaPorta on the women's 4x100 relay, which finished third of seven teams (55.29).
 
The Scarlet Raptors will compete at the Delaware Invitational next Thursday and Friday, with the hammer and javelin athletes throwing Thursday.
