SECONDARY INSURANCE POLICY

Rutgers University-Camden athletics provides a secondary athletic injury policy for every intercollegiate student-athlete at no additional charge. The policy is considered an “excess” policy, which means it will help cover any unpaid portion of a medical bill after it has been submitted to the athlete’s personal primary medical insurance plan.

Medical expenses acquired due to an athletic injury will be billed to the primary policy first and if a balance remains, it will be submitted to the secondary insurance plan for consideration of payment. This secondary insurance policy only covers injuries that occur during official, supervised practices or games; pre-existing injuries are not covered. Additionally, Rutgers University secondary insurance benefits are payable only for charges incurred within 104 weeks after the original injury date.  Do not assume all medical expenses will be covered; out of pocket expenses may occur.

The student-athlete’s primary insurance deductible must be met before their primary insurance takes effect for coverage.  Any additional amounts left outstanding after the primary insurance coverage will then be submitted to Rutgers University secondary insurance policy for consideration of payment.  Any bills and Explanations of Benefits (EOB’s) accrued by the student-athlete should be given to the athletic training staff upon receiving them to help expedite the payment process.  Rutgers University-Camden is not responsible for bills that have gone into collections due to non-payment.  If needed, please fax the entire bill or EOB directly to us at 856-225-6024.

Second opinions are not discouraged by the athletic training staff.  If a student-athlete would like to seek a second opinion outside of Cooper University Hospital physicians, they must make the athletic training staff aware in order to be considered for coverage by Rutgers University Camden secondary insurance policy.  Student-athletes who seek multiple opinions or “doctor shopping” for an athletics sponsored injury, will not be covered by the secondary insurance policy.  Treatment sought outside the knowledge of the Rutgers Camden athletic training staff may not be eligible for coverage.
