Biography

Eric Gilchrist Jr. made his Rutgers-Camden athletic debut with two different programs during the 2016-17 winter season, playing with the men’s basketball team and joining the indoor track team in time to compete in the New Jersey Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships. He followed that up with a fine season during his collegiate debut in outdoor track.
 
Gilchrist, who returns to the track program this winter and will serve as one of the men's tri-captains, also was a member of the Rutgers-Camden Athletic Director’s Honor Roll during the 2016 fall semester.
 
Outdoor Track 2017: Ran sprints in eight invitationals, competing in the 200- and 400-meter dashes, as well as legs on the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams…Made his outdoor debut at the Golden Ram Invitational (March 25), placing 27th of 48 in the 200-meter dash (24.46) and 14th of 36 in the 400-meter dash (52.92), while also running the leadoff leg on the 4x100 team, which finished third of five in a 44.55 clocking…At the Stockton Invitational on April 1, ran at 200 meters (sixth of 22, 23.95), 400 meters (11th of 21, 55.07) and as the anchor of the 4x400 team (seventh of seven, 3:52.29)…Placed ninth of 20 at 400 meters (54.07) and 20th of 26 at 200 meters (23.99) at the Oscar Moore Open (April 8)…Ran the third leg of the 4x400 (ninth of 14, 3:40.15) and also finished sixth out of 39 runners in the 400-meter dash (51.41) at Gwynedd Mercy’s Mid-Week Twilight meet (April 12)…Finished 49th of 78 in the 400-meter dash (53.73) at the Widener Invitational (April 22)…Placed 20th of 76 with a personal best of 51.39 in the 400-meter dash and also finished 44th of 90 in the 200-meter dash (23.62) at the Lions Invitational (April 29)…During the first day of the NJAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships (May 6), ran in the preliminaries of both the 200-meter dash (20th of 29 with a personal best of 23.56) and the 400-meter dash (16th of 27, 52.17)…The next day at the NJAC meet, ran the second leg of the 4x100 (seventh of eight, 45.90) and the leadoff leg of the 4x400 (seventh of seven, 3:47.12)…Closed his season at the Swarthmore Final Qualifier meet (May 15), placing 34th of 44 in the 400-meter dash (51.93).
 
Indoor Track 2016-17: Competed in the 400-meter dash at the NJAC Championships, placing 19th of 20 in a time of 56.78.
 
Basketball 2016-17: Played in seven games, averaging 1.7 points and 1.4 rebounds…Added two steals…Made his Rutgers-Camden debut playing 15 minutes at Rosemont College (Nov. 18), notching seven points (2-for-3 from the floor, 3-for-4 from the foul line)…Added one steal and one rebound in that game…Notched three points and one rebound in nine minutes of playing time at The College of New Jersey (Nov. 22)…Had a high of four rebounds at Stockton University (Dec. 7)…Notched two points and two rebounds at Arcadia University (Jan. 2)…Collected one steal against Kean University (Jan. 7).
 
Pre-Rutgers: Played his freshman season at Wilmington University in Delaware, appearing in seven games and collecting two points (0.3 ppg)…Also attended Harford Community College, but didn’t play basketball.
 
High School: Captured three varsity letters apiece in basketball and track and field at Christiana High School, graduating in 2013…Earned All-Conference Honorable Mention in basketball…Cap0tured Sportsmanship awards…Team MVP in track and field…Honor Roll student all four years…National Honor Society…Representative for Delaware in the Washington News and Journalism Conference.
 
Personal: Born June 3, 1995…Enjoys basketball, cooking and being with friends…Member of Rutgers-Camden’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC)…English major at Rutgers-Camden…Future plans include working at a sports marketing firm and being a family man…Eric is the son of Eric and Latonya Gilchrist of Newark.
