Assistant Coach Ray Hastings (3rd season)
High School: Haddon Heights
College: Camden County College
After coaching with Michelle Schlichtig and leading the Haddon Heights High School softball program to three conference championships, two South Jersey titles and the 2013 state championship, Ray Hastings joined Schlichtig’s coaching staff on the collegiate level for the 2015 Rutgers University-Camden softball season. The Scarlet Raptors responded quickly, posting their best record (21-13-1 overall and 11-7 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference) since going 31-15/13-5 in 2007. After helping the Raptors post a 21-19 season in 2016, Hastings returns to the staff for his third season this spring.
No stranger to athletic success, Hastings was a standout baseball player at Haddon Heights and Camden County College, who went on to play professionally. He also has served as a Professional Fastpitch Instructor since 2006 and was the Assistant Varsity Softball Coach at Haddon Heights High School from March 2012-March 2014.
During his playing days with the Garnets, Hastings captured First Team All-Colonial Conference honors three times (2000, 2001 and 2002), was a First Team All-South Jersey Group 2 player in 2000 and 2001 and added First Team All-South Jersey Group 1 honors in 2002. A three-time team captain at Haddon Heights High School, Hastings capped his scholastic career in 2002 when he earned First Team All-State Group 1 and South Jersey Defensive Player of the Year honors.
After attending Brookdale Community College during the 2002-03 scholastic year, Hastings continued his education at Camden County College. He played for the Cougars in 2005 and 2006, earning First Team All-Region 19 and First Team All-Garden State Athletic Conference honors both seasons.
Hastings moved on to professional baseball in 2007, playing for the Lewisville Lizards, who were coached by former Major Leaguer and current New York Mets First Base Coach Tom Goodwin. During the 2008 season he played for the Texarkana Gunslingers under former Major League pitcher Steve Trout. He led the Continental League in games started and finished third in the league in runs scored.
After a knee injury ended his career with the Gunslingers in 2009, Hastings continued his fastpitch softball instruction. He works at various sites in South Jersey, including the Balltown Athletic Club in Berlin, and also contracts with various travel ball teams in South Jersey and the Philadelphia area.
Hastings’ work with the Haddon Heights softball program helped the Garnets earn Colonial Conference titles from 2012-2014, win South Jersey Group titles in 2012 (Group 2) and 2013 (Group 1) and capture the 2013 New Jersey Group 1 state championship. The championship team compiled a lofty 26-3 record.
Hastings is a resident of Haddon Heights.
