Junior pitcher Ian Scheidemann hurled a gem on Saturday as the Rutgers-Camden baseball team opened its New Jersey Athletic Conference schedule with a 2-0 victory over William Paterson University. Scheidemann hurled a two-hit shutout, while striking out 11 without issuing a walk. The first batter of the game had an infield single that deflected off Scheidemann’s glove. He held the Pioneers to only one hit the rest of the way – a second-inning single, which was one of only five balls Paterson hit out of the infield all day. That runner was erased on an inning-ending double play and only two other Pioneers reached base all game, coming on a fifth-inning error and a two-out hit batsman in the eighth inning. Scheidemann struck out the side in the third inning and fanned two batters in the fourth, fifth and ninth innings. Four of his strikeouts were on called third strikes. He raised his record to 3-0 this season, while lowering his ERA to 0.87.
