Freshman goalkeeper James Brett collected a pair of shutouts during the week and made two huge saves in the penalty kick shootout Saturday to help Rutgers-Camden capture its fourth New Jersey Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Championship in five years. Brett had four saves in a 2-0 semifinal victory at Stockton University Wednesday. He notched a career-high 14 saves as the Raptors played to a 0-0 deadlock with top-seeded Montclair State Saturday in the NJAC title game, which went to penalty kicks to decide the conference champion. In a penalty kick shootout that stretched to seven kicks per team before deciding the champion, Brett denied the Red Hawks’ first shot and then made a diving save on the last shot to give the Raptors the NJAC crown and an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament. Earlier in the week, Brett captured his second honor this season as the NJAC Defensive Player of the Week and was named Honorable Mention on the All-NJAC team. Brett owns six shutouts, a 1.02 goals-against average, 111 saves and an .841 save percentage while earning every decision this season for the 13-7-2 Scarlet Raptors.
