Win lifts Raptors into NJAC playoffs

Box Score NEWARK, N.J. (Oct. 29, 2013) – The Rutgers University-Camden volleyball team needed to win its last two New Jersey Athletic Conference matches of the season in order to qualify for the six-team post-season tournament.

The Scarlet Raptors accomplished that task here Tuesday night by sweeping Rutgers-Newark, 25-18, 25-19 and 25-15, to grab the sixth seed in the upcoming NJAC playoffs. The Scarlet Raptors will play on the road Tuesday night at a site to be determined.

Rutgers-Camden collected 29 kills over the three sets, including 12 in the first set, as it raised its record to 7-25 overall and 3-5 in the NJAC. The young Scarlet Raptors have won three of their last five matches, including a home sweep against conference rival New Jersey City University last Thursday to put themselves in position to earn a playoff berth.

Last season Rutgers-Camden advanced all the way to the NJAC final before losing to Richard Stockton College.

Sophomore middle hitter Olivia Rowland (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) continued her outstanding play with a big match against the Scarlet Raiders, notching 12 kills and a stellar .786 hitting percentage to set a single-match program record for the highest percentage with 12 or more kills. She also added two solo and two assisted blocks.

"Once again our team needed Olivia to step up and be a leader and she did that," said Rutgers-Camden Head Coach Matt Dever. "We needed a win to get us into the playoffs and to say she played well is an understatement.

" The girls worked extra hard over the last few weeks. They really wanted to make the playoffs and their efforts paid off. I was happy for them."

Freshman Cortnee Wilkerson (Los Angeles, CA/West Adams Prep), meanwhile, had eight kills, a .350 hitting percentage and four digs, while sophomore middle hitter Sydney Allen (Magnolia, NJ/Sterling) collected five kills and a .231 percentage.

Freshman outside hitter Cari Applegate (Stratford, NJ/Sterling), sophomore right side Kristin Bellamy (Brookhaven, PA/Cardinal O'Hara) and junior middle hitter Morgan Halbruner (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Regional) each added three kills. Applegate also notched five digs, two assists and two service aces.

Junior setter Michelle Dixon (Sicklerville, NJ/Eastern Regional) notched 19 assists and four digs, while freshman libero Melanie Kaiser (Somerdale, NJ/Sterling) had 11 digs and sophomore setter Brooke Hassan (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) added six digs.

Kaiser, Hassan and freshman setter Nancy Brown (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) joined Applegate with two aces apiece.
