Box Score GLASSBORO, N.J. – Senior guard
Rich McNamara (Southampton, NJ/Seneca) scored a game-high 23 points and added a team-high 10 rebounds for a double-double to spark the Rowan University men's basketball team over Rutgers University-Camden, 75-69, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game here Wednesday night.
Rowan improves to 9-10 overall and 4-8 in the NJAC, while Rutgers-Camden falls to 4-15 and 2-10.
The two teams split the season series, after the Scarlet Raptors took an 85-69 decision in Camden on Nov. 26. Rowan leads the all-time series, 88-30.
Rowan never trailed, and was only tied once at 2-2, as the Profs built a 38-32 lead at the break. With McNamara leading the way with 15 first-half points, the Profs led by as many as 12 points (34-22) before the Scarlet Raptors went on a 10-4 run to close out the first half.
Rutgers-Camden received 12 first-half points from sophomore guard
Steven Schneider (Berlin, NJ/Eastern Regional), who shot 4-for-5 from three-point range in the opening 20 minutes.
Junior guard/forward
Alex Smart (Sicklerville, NJ/Timber Creek) had 10 first-half points for the Scarlet Raptors, who made 13 turnovers before halftime.
Rutgers-Camden opened the second half with a 9-6 run, cutting its deficit to three points on five different occasions, the last at 46-43, but Rowan responded with a seven-point run to make it a 10-point game again at 53-43. Senior guard
Jason Rosenberg (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) scored four points during the run and the Profs eventually stretched their lead to 64-48, their largest of the game. They led, 74-64, with 34 seconds remaining before the Raptors ran off five straight points to slice the gap to 74-69 with 23.6 seconds remaining, but McNamara closed out the scoring with a foul shot and the game with a defensive rebound.
In addition to McNamara's double-double, the Profs also received 15 points and a game-high nine assists from Rosenberg, while senior guard
Phil Jackson (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) added 13 points. Senior forward
Jason Sofman (West Milford, NJ/West Milford) added 12 points and nine rebounds.
Rutgers-Camden received 22 points from Smart, who also added a game- and career-high 14 rebounds for his first double-double. Smart shot 9-for-15 from the floor, including 1-for-3 from three-point range.
Junior guard/forward
Teon Russell (Camden, NJ/Woodrow Wilson) added 18 points for the Scarlet Raptors, while adding nine rebounds. Schneider finished the game with 12 points, two shy of his career high which was set against Rowan in the first meeting of the season.
Rowan shot 27-for-66 from the floor (40.9 percent), while Rutgers-Camden shot 28-for-70 (40.0). The Scarlet Raptors held a slim 45-44 edge off the boards, but also made six more turnovers (18-12) than the Profs.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Saturday when it hosts Montclair State University in a 3 p.m. NJAC game.
