Box Score 2 UNION, N.J. – The Rutgers University-Camden softball team went head-to-head with one of the top-ranked teams in the country, but the Kean University Cougars came out with a sweep in the New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader here Saturday.
Kean edged the Scarlet Raptors, 4-3, in the eighth inning of the opener, before completing the sweep with a 5-0 win in the nightcap.
The Scarlet Raptors fell to 14-9-1 overall and 6-4 in the NJAC with their third straight loss.
The Cougars, who are ranked No. 25 in the latest NFCA Division III poll, improve to 24-6 overall and 9-1 in the conference.
Rutgers-Camden plays another NJAC doubleheader Tuesday at 3 p.m. when the Scarlet Raptors visit Richard Stockton College.
Kean 4, Rutgers-Camden 3
After the two teams battled to a 3-3 tie through seven innings, the Raptors failed to take advantage of the international tie-breaker in the top of the eighth. That run ended a string of five straight scoreless innings for both teams. Kean scored a pair of runs in the first inning. Winning pitcher
Courtney Yard (Stockton, NJ/Hunterdon Central) singled home one run and scored the other on a single by senior shortstop
Kelly Moorehead (Hicksville, NY/Hicksville).Rutgers-Camden responded with three runs in the second inning. Sophomore centerfielder
Lindsay Day (Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a single by freshman first baseman
Jessea Macaluso (Charlotte, NC/Allentown). Junior leftfielder
Devon Welsh (Maple Shade, NJ/Audubon) drilled a two-out RBI single to plate Day, and both Welsh and Macaluso advanced on a passed ball. They scored on a two-run single by senior catcher
Tabby Dick (Gloucester City, NJ/Gloucester City). Kean tied the game in the bottom of the frame when Berezny singled and eventually scored on a ground out.
Raptor sophomore
Brittany Scott (Buena, NJ/Buena Regional) allowed eight hits and four walks while taking the loss. Scott (12-6) struck out three and allowed only two earned runs.
Yard (13-4) scattered nine hits and one walk, while striking out seven and allowing three earned runs. Welsh and Scott both had two hits for the Scarlet Raptors.
Kean 5, Rutgers-Camden 0
The Cougars scored all five of their runs in the fourth inning of the second game, with three unearned tallies coming on a two-out error. Those runs were more than enough for the Cougars, who rode the four-hit shutout pitching of junior Rebecca Rotolo (Linden, NJ/Linden) to the win. Rotolo (11-2) walked one and struck out two.
Scott (12-7) went the distance in the second game as well, allowing 10 hits, three walks and five runs, only two of them earned. She struck out one.
For the doubleheader, Welsh went 2-for-5 with one run and one RBI, while Day was 2-for-6 with one run. Scott and Dick both went 2-for-7, with Dick adding two RBIs.
