Rowan sweeps Rutgers-Camden in softball twinbill

GLASSBORO, N.J.– Rowan University senior pitcher Krysti Maronski (Woodbury Heights, NJ/Gloucester County Institute of Technology) tossed a five-hit shutout in the opener and sophomore hurler Beth Ann Hyland (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) didn't allow an earned run in a complete game in the nightcap as the Profs swept Rutgers University-Camden, 3-0 and 5-2, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference softball doubleheader here Tuesday.

Rowan improves to 29-8 overall and 13-3 in the NJAC, while Rutgers-Camden falls to 15-14-1 and 7-9.

The Scarlet Raptors close the regular season Saturday when they host Rutgers-Newark in a 1 p.m. NJAC doubleheader.

The Profs scored the only run Maronski needed on an opposite-field home run to right field by their leadoff hitter in the first inning, sophomore shortstop Shilah Snead (Malaga, NJ/Delsea Regional).

Rowan added a run in the fifth on a double by senior leftfielder Jennifer Arcella (Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley. The Profs tacked on a controversial run in the sixth on a triple by freshman first baseman Damariz Mercado (Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield), who was ruled safe at the plate on a bang-bang play on a fielder's choice hit by Snead.

Maronski (17-3), meanwhile allowed only five hits, while striking out 11. The Raptors had two hits apiece by senior catcher

reached on an error and advanced on a single by sophomore centerfielder Lindsay Day (Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest). Rice scored on a single by freshman first baseman Jessea Macaluso (Charlotte, NC/Allentown). Day was plated on a single by junior Devon Welsh (Maple Shade, NJ/Audubon), who had a fine game with two hits and a stellar catch in left field.

Hyland (12-5) finished with a four-hitter, allowing one walk and two unearned runs, while striking out five.

Scott (13-12) also allowed only four hits and walked one, but was charged with five earned runs. She struck out one.
