Box Score LANCASTER, Penn. – Senior tri-captain
Joe Auleta (Hammonton, NJ/Hammonton) scored a pair of goals to lift the nationally-ranked Rutgers University-Camden men's soccer team to its first victory of the season, 2-0 over Virginia Wesleyan College, in a game played at Franklin and Marshall College Saturday.
The Scarlet Raptors, ranked No. 2 in the pre-season NSCAA Division III Top 25 poll, evened their record at 1-1 after falling to No. 10 Franklin and Marshall College, 1-0, on Friday. The Marlins, who received votes toward that NSCAA Top 25 poll, fall to 0-1-1 after opening their season with a 0-0 tie against No. 11-ranked York College on Friday.
Although the Scarlet Raptors were outshot, 4-2, in the opening half, they had the only shot that found the mark. Only 12:09 into the game, Auleta scored off a feed from junior tri-captain
Connor Hurff (Sewell, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) for the Scarlet Raptors' first goal of the season.
Auleta added an insurance tally at 62:03 on a restart after a Virginia Wesleyan foul. He drilled a shot to the upper left corner of the goal that hit off the bottom of the crossbar and found the back of the net.
The Scarlet Raptor defense did the rest, limiting the Marlins to nine shots, but only three on goal. Sophomore keeper
Eric Bumbera (Wall, NJ/Wall) made three saves to pick up his first career shutout.
The Marlins finished with a 9-7 edge in shots, but Rutgers-Camden held a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal and a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Wednesday with a 6:30 p.m. game at Cabrini College.
