Box Score GLASSBORO, N.J. (April 28, 2015) – The sixth-seeded Rutgers University-Camden softball team threw everything it had at nationally-ranked Rowan University here Tuesday in the opening game of the New Jersey Athletic Conference playoffs.
Unfortunately for the Scarlet Raptors, the top-seeded Profs scored one early run and made it stand up as Rowan defeated Rutgers-Camden, 1-0.
Mackenzie Mason...lone Raptor hit The Profs, ranked No. 9 nationally in the NFCA Division III poll, improve to 34-4 and advance to Friday's winners' bracket game, where they will play The College of New Jersey at 1 p.m. TCNJ lost to William Paterson, 5-0, on Tuesday.
Rutgers-Camden, meanwhile, falls into the losers' bracket and will play Kean University at 11 a.m. The Cougars lost to Ramapo, 8-2, on Tuesday.
Exactly two weeks after being swept by Rowan in a doubleheader in Camden by scores of 18-1 and 10-4, the Scarlet Raptors (21-12-1) made sure that Tuesday's contest was tight from start to finish.
The Profs scored the game's only run in the second inning, starting when sophomore designated player
Sara Finnegan (South Brunswick, NJ/South Brunswick) was hit by a pitch to open the frame. Freshman
Rosalie Hood (Egg Harbor City, NJ/Cedar Creek) was inserted as a pinch-runner, and she advanced on an infield single by sophomore right fielder
Sammy Vradenburg (Park Ridge, NJ/Park Ridge). A wild pitch advanced the runners to second and third, and Hood scored on a ground out by junior shortstop
Shilah Snead (Malaga, NJ/Delsea Regional). Junior pitcher
Beth Ann Hyland (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) did the rest for the Profs. Hyland (16-2) hurled no-hit ball until the sixth inning, when freshman
Mackenzie Mason (Carneys Point, NJ/Penns Grove) had a one-out pinch-hit single through the left side of the infield. One out later, sophomore right fielder
Jalene Garcia (Vineland, NJ/Vineland) drew a walk to place the tying run in scoring position, but the threat was ended with a fielder's choice. Mason was the only Raptor to reach second base all day.
Junior pitcher
Brittany Scott (Buena, NJ/Buena Regional) opened the seventh inning with a walk, but Hyland ended the game with two strikeouts and an infield popup to complete her one-hit shutout. She walked three and struck out eight.
Scott (16-11) was the tough-luck losing pitcher, allowing only three hits, including two by Vradenburg. She walked two and struck out four in her six-inning complete game.
