BETHLEHEM, Penn. (April 26, 2016) – Through 4-1/2 innings here Tuesday, the Rutgers University-Camden baseball team looked like it would coast to an easy non-conference victory.
Moravian College had other ideas, however, and the Greyhounds scored nine runs over the fifth and sixth innings to turn their 8-1 deficit into a 10-8 victory.
The loss drops Rutgers-Camden to 21-12, while Moravian improves to 18-18.
After both teams scored on a first-inning sacrifice fly – the Raptors' coming off the bat of junior rightfielder
Doug Carter Jr. (Union, NJ/Union – Rutgers-Camden took the lead with a two-run third inning. Freshman shortstop
Chris Jones (Sewell, NJ/Bishop Eustace Prep) ripped a run-scoring triple and came home on an infield error.
Rutgers-Camden scored three more runs in the fourth, sparked by a one-out double by freshman second baseman
Ray Taylor (Collingswood, NJ/). He scored on a triple down the right field line by senior second baseman
Brett Tenuto (Audubon, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) and junior left fielder
Joe Brooks (Blackwood, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) reached on an infield error, scoring Tenuto. Carter followed with an RBI double to left.
Two more Raptor runs were pushed across in the fifth inning, sparked by a leadoff triple from junior catcher
Jon Theckston (Gloucester City, NJ/Gloucester Catholic). Junior centerfielder
Zach Ellin (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) singled home Theckston and eventually scored on a two-out double by Tenuto.
Moravian started its comeback in the bottom of the fifth with a five-run frame, highlighted by four hits and two errors. The biggest hit in the frame was a two-run triple by junior rightfielder
Anthony Gaetaniello (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth). Senior first baseman
Charles Savite (Hackettstown, NJ/West Morris Central) added an RBI double in the inning.
After cutting the gap to 8-6 in the fifth, the Greyhounds took the lead for good with a four-run sixth inning. Moravian used five hits, a walk and a wild pitch in the inning. They took the lead at 9-8 on an RBI single by Savite.
The Scarlet Raptors rallied in the ninth inning on a double by Theckston and a single by Taylor, but Moravian
sophomore
Dan Morrin (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks East) also struck out the side to earn his second save. Overall, Morrin worked two innings, allowing three hits and striking out five.
Senior
Hunter Guard (Hopatcong, NJ/Hopatcong), the fourth of five Moravian pitchers, picked up his first win in four decisions. He worked two scoreless innings, allowing one hit, while striking out two.
Scarlet Raptor sophomore
Carter Fichter (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield Memorial), the second of three Raptor hurlers, took the loss, allowing three hits, a walk and two earned runs in one inning of relief for junior starter
Zach Welsher (Audubon, NJ/Audubon). Fichter struck out two. Welsher worked five innings, allowing 10 hits and eight runs, seven earned. He struck out two.
Savite went 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs to lead Moravian's 13-hit attack.
Rutgers-Camden had 14 hits, led by a 3-for-5 day from Theckston, including one run scored. Tenuto, Brooks and Taylor each added two hits, while Tenuto and Carter had two RBIs apiece. Tenuto and Brooks both scored twice.
The Raptors entertain Montclair State University Thursday at 3:30 p.m. in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game.
