WAYNE, N.J. (April 2, 2017) – The opening doubleheader of the New Jersey Athletic Conference baseball season was delayed a day due to rain, but when the Rutgers University-Camden baseball team was finally set for NJAC play, sophomore Ian Scheidemann (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) was ready.

Scheidemann hurled eight outstanding innings to lead the Scarlet Raptors over William Paterson University, 3-1, in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader here Sunday. In the nightcap, the Pioneers used a 13-hit attack to beat the Scarlet Raptors, 7-3.

The split leaves both teams at 1-1 in the NJAC. Rutgers-Camden is 9-8 overall, while William Paterson is 8-8-2.

The Scarlet Raptors gave Scheidemann the lead for good with a second-inning run, sparked by a leadoff double from sophomore second baseman Chris Jones (Washington Township, NJ/Bishop Eustace Prep). He moved to third on a bunt single by senior leftfielder Doug Carter Jr. (Union, NJ/Union) and scored on a sacrifice fly by senior designated hitter Brandon Cornelius (Sicklerville, NJ/Timber Creek).

Both teams scored a run in the fourth inning, with the Raptors plating a run after a leadoff walk to Jones. He advanced on a wild pitch and an infield error and scored on a sacrifice fly by senior catcher Jon Theckston (Gloucester City, NJ/Gloucester Catholic). The Pioneers countered with a run on two hits and a squeeze bunt.

Rutgers-Camden tacked on a run in the ninth on a solo home run by Cornelius, his second homer of the season.

A two-run single by senior first baseman Eriq Colon (Hackensack, NJ/Hackensack) helped the Pioneers tie the game in the bottom of the fifth inning.
