ASTON, Penn. (Nov. 11, 2018) – A double-yellow card midway through the first half forced the Rutgers University-Camden men's soccer team to play one man down for the final 61:15 of its ECAC Division III Men's Soccer Championship quarterfinal game here Sunday afternoon at Neumann University.
While the Scarlet Raptors weathered the storm most of the day, they fell to fellow conference rival William Paterson University, 2-0, to close their season at 14-6-2. Paterson moves on to the ECAC semifinals next weekend.
Despite a scoreless first half, with both teams collecting six shots, the Raptors were put in a hole only 28:45 into the contest when a pair of yellow cards sent off one of their players. Paterson finally took advantage of its break at 55:38 when Christopher Fuentes scored off a feed from Kyle Adams. The Pioneers added an insurance goal with 15 seconds remaining on a breakaway by Brandon Harley as the Scarlet Raptors were pressing to even the score.
Paterson finished with a 20-9 advantage in shots, including a 14-3 margin in the second half. Rutgers-Camden held an 8-4 edge in corner kicks.
Pioneer goalie Kyle Quigley made four saves to notch the shutout. Raptor senior keeper
James Brett ended his stellar career with seven saves. Brett, a two-time New Jersey Athletic Conference Goalkeeper of the Year, including this season, closed his career playing in 87 games and logging 7,704:55 minutes in goal, second on the program's career list. He also finished second in wins, closing with a 42-32-12 record, second in shots faced (1,211), third in saves (450) and fourth in shutouts (18). He finished his career with a 1.19 goals-against average and a .815 save percentage.
Sunday's game was the 300th career contest at Rutgers-Camden for Head Coach
Tim Oswald (pictured above), who has been the Scarlet Raptors' mentor since 2006. In his 13 seasons, he has posted a 186-79-35 record.
