Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Robinson's career-high 22 points lifts Rutgers-Camden women

CAMDEN, N.J. (Dec. 1, 2018) – Senior guard Gabby Greene hit four clutch foul shots – two of them technical fouls – with 1:50 remaining to break a tie and senior guard/forward Ariel Robinson hit four huge free throws down the stretch on her way to a career-high 22 points as the Rutgers University-Camden women's basketball team outlasted William Paterson University, 75-72, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game here Saturday afternoon.

The Scarlet Raptors improve to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the NJAC, while Paterson falls to 3-4 overall and 1-2 in the conference. Paterson, which leads the all-time series, 53-12, had won 22 of the previous 24 games against Rutgers-Camden.

Rutgers-Camden built a first-half lead of 39-23 before settling for a 40-29 lead at the break. The Raptors led by 11 points three times during the third quarter, the last at 48-37, before the Pioneers mounted a comeback. Paterson tied the game at 61-61 on a layup by sophomore guard Brianna Brooks with 4:04 remaining and then at 65-65 on a Brooks jumper with 2:15 left before a foul and a technical foul on the bench gave Rutgers-Camden a big opportunity with 1:50 remaining. Greene took advantage of that chance by sinking all four of her foul shots, giving the Raptors the lead for good, 69-65.

Paterson fought back to cut the gap to 69-68 on a three-point play by sophomore forward Vianca Soriano with 52 seconds remaining. Raptor sophomore guard Shane Holmes gave Rutgers-Camden a little breathing room by hitting her first foul shot with 28 seconds left before Robinson was fouled after grabbing the missed second free throw. Robinson hit both of her shots to make it a 72-68 game and, following a layup by the Pioneers' CeCe Green, Robinson drew another foul and hit two more free throws with 13 seconds remaining.

Soriano cut the Pioneers' deficit to 74-72 with a layup, but Raptor freshman guard Wykira Johnson-Kelly hit a foul shot with six seconds remaining for the final margin. Her second shot was rebounded by the Pioneers' Alisa Giordano, who barely missed tying the game at the buzzer when a desperation half-court shot went off the rim.

Robinson's 22 points broke her previous high of 17 set against Wilkes University on Nov. 15, 2017. She also added a team-high 11 rebounds to notch her first double-double of the season and the third of her career. Robinson, pictured above, added a team-high three steals and chipped in with two assists. She shot 9-for-10 from the floor and 4-for-4 from the foul line.

Junior guard Fatimah Williams added 21 points for the Scarlet Raptors, while notching her first career double-double with a career-high 10 rebounds. Her previous rebounding high of nine came against Pitt-Bradford on Nov. 17, 2017.

Greene finished with 14 points, aided by 6-for-6 shooting from the line, as she moved into 12th place on the program's all-time scoring list with 1,046 points. She passed Andrea Fogel, who notched 1,037 points from 1986-89.

Holmes was the fourth Raptor in double figures, scoring 11 points while dishing off a team-high four assists.

Rutgers-Camden shot 24-for-56 from the floor (42.9 percent), while Paterson was 30-for-76 (39.5). The Pioneers held a 51-50 edge off the boards, but Rutgers-Camden scored 24 points (24-for-36, 66.7) from the foul line to Paterson's 12 (12-for-27, 44.4).

Soriano notched a double-double with game-high totals of 28 points and 15 rebounds, while adding a game-high six steals. Greene added 13 points for the Pioneers, while Giordano had a game-high five assists.

Rutgers-Camden hosts The College of New Jersey Wednesday at 6 p.m. in another NJAC game.
