CAMDEN, N.J. (Sept. 19, 2018) – For most of the evening, the Rutgers University-Camden women's soccer team controlled the midfield, shut down the Cabrini University attack and threatened to produce some solid scoring opportunities of its own here Wednesday in a non-conference game.
Yet while Rutgers-Camden was either stopped by the Cavaliers' strong defense, watched its passes miss connection around the box or misfired on the solid chances it produced, Cabrini took advantage of its limited opportunities. As a result, the Cavaliers scored the first two goals of the contest and hung on to outlast Rutgers-Camden, 2-1.
The Cavaliers improve to 4-2, while the Scarlet Raptors fall to 3-4-1. Rutgers-Camden is now 5-2 in its all-time series against Cabrini.
Late in a scoreless first half, Cabrini broke the ice when freshman Kelly Kane sent a pass toward the left post. Brittany Purdy finished the scoring play at 41:39 with her second goal of the season. The Cavaliers added a second goal in the 70th minute when Tori Kasper chipped a ball over the Raptor back line and Katelyn Gilinger ran onto it. With Raptor sophomore goalie
Natalie Eberhardt charging out of the net in an attempt to shut down the play, Gilinger sent a perfect chip over her into the empty net for her third goal of the season.
Behind the stellar play of senior midfielder
Melissa Peel and junior midfielder
Sarah Zuzulock, the Scarlet Raptors kept pressure on the Cabrini back line and goalie Ashley Tutzauer, but the Cavaliers were up to the challenge most of the game. Rutgers-Camden finally broke the shutout bid at 79:34 when freshman
Kayla de Guzman scored from a pack near the left post. It was the first collegiate goal and first two points for Guzman,

The Scarlet Raptors threatened for the tying goal the rest of the way, but couldn't find it. Rutgers-Camden held a deceptive 9-7 advantage in shots and a 2-1 margin in corner kicks. Both Eberhardt and Tutzauer finished with four saves.
The Scarlet Raptors designated the game as a fundraiser to battle pediatric cancer through the Go4theGoal organization. Anyone wishing to contribute to the cause can do so online at
