Pizzaro's OT goal lifts Rutgers-Camden women past Kean

UNION, N.J. (Sept. 22, 2018) – Freshman forward Ava Pizzaro scored the game-winning goal 1:08 into the first overtime period to lift the Rutgers University-Camden women's soccer team over Kean University, 2-1, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game here Saturday night.

The Scarlet Raptors evened their record at 4-4-1 overall and improved to 1-0-1 in the NJAC with only their fourth victory in 21 all-time meetings against the Cougars. Rutgers-Camden is now 4-14-3 against Kean, although two of those victories have come in the last two meetings, including a 1-0 win in Camden Oct. 14, 2017.

Kean falls to 2-3-3 overall and 0-1-1 in the NJAC.

Pizzaro's third goal of her collegiate career was her first game winner. It came after Kean goalie Mary Bystrycki charged out of the net in an attempt to break up the play. Pizzaro's shot deflected off her and into an open net.

Pizzaro's shot was the 12th of the game and only the seventh on goal for the Scarlet Raptors, who were out-shot, 22-12, in the contest. It was the only shot for either team in the young overtime period.

Rutgers-Camden, which is 2-1-1 in its last four games, held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.

After a long scoreless spell, the Scarlet Raptors jumped on the board first when sophomore forward Meghan Wachira collected her team-leading fifth goal, assisted by Pizzaro (pictured above). She hit a shot from 30 yards out over Bystrycki's head.

Kean tied the game at 84:36 on the third goal of the season by Brittany Birth, assisted by Carley Garlasco. Her shot, from 25 yards out, sailed over the head of Raptor sophomore goalie Natalie Eberhardt, who played a tremendous game with eight saves.

Bystrycki had five saves for the Cougars.

Rutgers-Camden returns to action Wednesday when it plays national power The College of New Jersey in Ewing in a 7 p.m. NJAC game. The Lions are currently ranked seventh in the United Soccer Coaches Division III Top 25 and eighth in the D3soccer.com Top 25 polls.
