CAMDEN, N.J. (Jan. 12, 2019) – The Rutgers University-Camden women's basketball team placed three players in double-digits, led by 24 points from junior guard
Fatimah Williams, as it defeated New Jersey City University, 57-45, here Saturday afternoon.
Rutgers-Camden, which has won three straight games, improves to 9-6 overall and 5-4 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. NJCU falls to 4-11 and 1-8.
Rutgers-Camden leads its all-time series against NJCU, 39-24, including wins in seven straight games.
After NJCU scored the first field goal of the game, Rutgers-Camden ran off six straight points to take the lead for good, on its way to a 26-18 lead after one quarter. The Scarlet Raptors increased their advantage to 42-23 by halftime, led by 16 points from Williams. Senior guard/forward
Ariel Robinson had eight points and eight rebounds in the opening half, while sophomore guard
Shane Holmes also added eight points. For NJCU, freshman guard Teresa Ortiz scored 11 first-half points, while senior guard Marajiah Bacon added seven.
The closest the Gothic Knights came in the second half was 13 points, at 60-47, late in the third quarter.
Williams' 24-point explosion capped a terrific week in which she averaged 23.7 points during three Raptor victories. Williams,
pictured above, shot 10-for-17 from the floor and also finished with eight rebounds.
Johnson-Kelly netted 19 points and senior guard
Gabby Greene noted 11 points, helping her move into ninth place on the program's all-time scoring list with 1,155 points. She passed Maureen McGovern (1994-99), who scored 1,154 points in her career. Greene added three steals, pushing her career total to 201 to become only the sixth player in program history to pass the 200 milestone.
Robinson finished with nine points and a game-high 10 rebounds to help Rutgers-Camden hold a 41-33 advantage off the boards. Holmes notched eight points, four rebounds and a game-high five assists.
Ortiz lead NJCU with 17 points, while Marajiah Bacon scored 14 and senior forward Miesha Bacon canned 13. Marajiah Bacon, who entered the game leading the NJAC and placing fourth in the country with a 26.2 scoring average, shot only 5-for-13 from the floor as the Raptors held her 12 points below her scoring average.
For the game, Rutgers-Camden shot 31-for-60 (51.7 percent) from the floor and NJCU was 21-for-61 (34.4).
Rutgers-Camden plays a 7 p.m. non-conference game at Wilkes University Monday before returning to NJAC action Wednesday at Rowan University (6 p.m.).
