Rutgers-Camden men outlast Rutgers-Newark, 62-60

NEWARK, N.J. (Jan. 5, 2019) – Saturday night's New Jersey Athletic Conference men's basketball game between Rutgers University-Camden and Rutgers University-Newark was as tight as the bond between the sister schools and NJAC rivals.

With a chance for both teams to leap ahead of their rivals in the NJAC standings, the game came down to the last play, when a Newark three-point attempt was off and the Scarlet Raptors survived with a wild 62-60 victory.

The win raised the Raptors' record to 2-12 overall and 2-5 in the NJAC, breaking the tie in the NJAC standings between the two teams and lifting Rutgers-Camden past Rutgers-Newark into eighth place in the conference. Newark falls to 7-6 overall and 1-6 in the NJAC.

The victory was the Raptors' first over the Scarlet Raiders since a 74-69 win on Feb. 11, 2015, snapping a six-game losing streak in the series. Rutgers-Newark leads the all-time series, 51-36.

Rutgers-Camden built a 59-46 lead with 3:45 remaining in the game before Newark caught fire with a 14-2 run that cut the margin to 61-60 with 10 seconds remaining. Senior forward Mark Isiofia-Thomas led the charge with seven points in the run.

With seven seconds remaining, the Raptors' freshman guard Adam Perry made it a two-point game by sinking a free throw. The Scarlet Raiders' attempt to win the game with a trey by junior guard Chase Barneys was off the mark as time expired.

Sophomore guard Terrance Harris, pictured above, scored a career-high 16 points to pace the Scarlet Raptors. His previous high of 15 came in back-to-back games Dec. 10 and 12 against Gwynedd-Mercy and Ramapo, respectively.

Sophomore guard Ian McCarthy notched 13 points for Rutgers-Camden. Senior forward Chin Akwarandu and senior guard Trai Greer scored eight points apiece. Greer added eight rebounds and seven assists, tying his Raptor career assist high set against Stockton on Nov. 28.

Thomas led the Scarlet Raiders with 18 points, while Barneys added 17. Senior guard Tyler Ofray notched nine points and 11 rebounds.

Rutgers-Camden shot 23-for-50 (46.0 percent) from the field, while Rutgers-Newark shot 23-for-68 (33.8). The Scarlet Raiders held a 40-34 advantage off the boards.

Rutgers-Camden returns to action Wednesday when it hosts Montclair State University in an 8 p.m. NJAC game.
