NEWARK, N.J. (Jan. 5, 2019) –Rutgers University-Newark junior guard/forward Hannah Ashby hit a three-pointer to key a 10-point run ending the first quarter, lifting the Scarlet Raiders over Rutgers University-Camden, 69-52, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference women's basketball game here Saturday night.
The Scarlet Raiders improve to 8-6 overall and 5-2 in the NJAC. The Scarlet Raptors fall to 6-6 and 3-4. It was Newark's first win over Camden since Jan.28, 2017. The Scarlet Raiders, who lost both head-to-head contests last year, lead the all-time series, 38-29.
The teams traded leads five times in the opening quarter, with Camden taking its last lead at 14-12. Moments later, Hannah Ashby drilled her trey and Newark finished out the quarter with its 10-point run to take a 22-14 lead into the second quarter. They stretched their run to 14 straight points to open the second quarter, hiking the margin to double digits. Rutgers-Camden sliced its deficit below 10 points only two times the rest of the night, at 26-17 and 28-19 in the second quarter.
Senior guard Faith Ashby finished with 14 points, seven assists and six rebounds for the Scarlet Raiders, who placed four players in double-digits. Junior center Comfort Akinbo and Hannah Ashby finished with 12 points apiece, while freshman guard Elisha India Cross added 10 points and eight rebounds.
Newark, which held a 45-28 advantage off the boards, also shot 51.0 percent (25-for-49) from the floor. Rutgers-Camden shot only 28.6 percent (18-for-63) from the floor, including only 7-for-36 (19.4) from three-point range.

Ariel Robinson added five boards. Holmes and Robinson both added three steals and three points.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Monday when it hosts Penn State University-Abington in a 6 p.m. non-conference game.
