Lauren Calabria scored a pair of goals and sophomore
Lindsay Hernandez added an assist and the game-winning goal as the Rutgers University-Camden women's soccer team defeated New Jersey City University, 4-1, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game here Saturday afternoon.
With its third win in four games, Rutgers-Camden improves to 3-7 overall and evens its NJAC record at 2-2.
NJCU falls to 7-5-1 overall and 0-3-1 in the conference. The Gothic Knights are 5-15 in their all-time series against the Scarlet Raptors.
Calabria opened the scoring with an unassisted goal at 10:54, drilling a high shot to the right side of the goal. In the 24th minute, a restart by senior back
Taylor O'Rourke led to another high shot to the right side by Hernandez for what proved to be the game-winning tally.
Only 4:51 into the second half, Calabria made it a 3-0 Raptor lead, converting a feed from Hernandez and tucking a low shot to the left side of the net. The goal gave her a team-leading three tallies on the season.
Freshman
Maggie Horn closed out the Raptor scoring with her first collegiate goal at 71:41. She was assisted by both freshman
Mya Bocchicchio and junior
Meghan Wachira for their first assists of the year, and the first of Bocchicchio's career.
NJCU closed out the scoring at 78:31 on a shot by Arame Diouf, assisted by Mallensy Vargas. It was the lone point of the day for the dangerous Vargas, who was effectively shut down by the Scarlet Raptor defense. She took 10 shots (five on goal) after entering the contest with 18 goals and eight assists for 44 points.
Sophomore goalie
Natalie Eberhardt earned the victory, making four saves and getting a team save from her defense. For the Gothic Knights, sophomore Cidney Lee-Sam had 10 saves and also received one team save.
Rutgers-Camden held a 23-16 advantage in shots and NJCU held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Wednesday when it hosts DeSales University in a 7 p.m. non-conference game.
