CAMDEN, N.J. (March 19, 2019) – The 2019 Rutgers University-Camden lacrosse team has been busy adding new entries to the program's record book, and the Scarlet Raptors added several more here Tuesday.
Rutgers-Camden extended its record for the best start in program history, moving to 3-0, as it defeated Gwynedd Mercy University, 20-15. In the process, the Scarlet Raptors tied the program record for the longest winning streak, matching the three-game strings accomplished in both 2013 (March 16-30) and 2016 (March 19-24). They will have a chance to break that mark on Saturday when they host DeSales University at 1 p.m.
With its 3-0 start, Rutgers-Camden already has won more games than the team accomplished all of last season, when it finished 2-11.
Rutgers-Camden accomplished its latest feats the hard way, roaring back from an 8-5 first-half deficit. The Scarlet Raptors closed out the first half scoring six of the final seven goals in the last 10 minutes before halftime. They tied the game at 9-9 on a goal by senior midfielder
Cara Racobaldo, assisted by freshman midfielder
Claire Gailliout, with 5:57 left before the break. Freshman attack
Hailey Egan put the Raptors ahead to stay with a free position shot 2:59 before the half. Freshman midfielder
Carly Gregg tacked on another goal 29 seconds later, giving the Raptors an 11-9 halftime lead.
The wild first half also featured another entry into the record book as Gwynedd Mercy's Laura Pelczar scored 18:35 into the game and Gregg answered only nine seconds later, assisted by freshman midfielder
Jazmin Torres. That nine-second span was the fastest back-to-back goals involving both teams in the Raptors' program history.
Rutgers-Camden wasn't done with records as Torres notched three quick goals within the first 6:30 of the second half. Her goals, all coming in a span of 2:56, set a program record for the fastest three goals by an individual Scarlet Raptor, breaking the mark of a 3:30 span by
Nicole Martin against Immaculata University on April 23, 2018. Moments after Gregg's third tally, Gregg added a goal nine seconds later, to tie for the second-fastest pair of goals by Raptor teammates in program history. They tied sisters Jessica and
Alexa Giampietro, who scored goals nine seconds apart against Wesley on March 22, 2011. The only faster set of Raptor goals came eight seconds apart against Penn State-Abington on March 19, 2018, accomplished by
Jessica Mayer and
Meghan Giordano.
Gregg's second-half goal built the Raptor lead to 15-9 and the closest the Griffins came after that was 16-13.
By the time the offensive display ended, Torres and Gregg had poured in six goals apiece, while Gailliout had four, Racobaldo had three and Egan notched one. Gailliout also added three assists and tied both Torres and Gregg with a game-high seven points. Torres also etched her name in the program records with a single-game mark of 14 draw controls, breaking the old mark of 10 shared by Victoria Heifet (March 28, 2017 against Delaware Valley) and
Elizabeth LaBar (March 27, 2013 against the College of Saint Elizabeth). Her 14 draw controls helped the Raptors set a single-game team mark with 22.
Junior
Kacie Walton was a stalwart on defense once again, notching a team-high six ground balls, while Racobaldo had two caused turnovers to lead the team.
Sophomore
Brittany Watson earned her third straight win in goal, notching 15 saves. She faced 44 shots, tied for the third-highest total ever faced by a Raptor keeper. She set the record of 48 last season against Manhattanville on April 4.
