E'town women spoil Rutgers-Camden's season soccer opener

CAMDEN, N.J. (Aug. 30, 2019) – The Elizabethtown College women's soccer team scored two goals in each half and went on to defeat Rutgers University-Camden, 4-1, in the season opener for both teams here Friday night.

The Blue Jays received a pair of goals from junior midfielder Janelle Barna, including the eventual game winner that put Elizabethtown ahead, 2-0, on its way to a 2-1 halftime lead. The Blue Jays went on to defeat the Scarlet Raptors for the third straight year in the season opener between the two teams.

Elizabethtown jumped on the scoreboard 13:21 into the first half after last season's leading scorer, Lydia Lawson, collected an uncleared ball near the top of the box and hit a high shot over Raptor junior goalie Natalie Eberhardt. Larson, a senior forward, was the Landmark Conference's Offensive Player of the Year as a sophomore and a junior.

In the 34th minute, Barna scored her first goal of the season after collecting a loose ball near the top of the box. She hit a high shot toward the left side of the net.

Rutgers-Camden cut its deficit to 2-1 in the 37th minute on a header at the back post by sophomore back Breana Winder, who was the New Jersey Athletic Conference's Rookie of the Year in 2018. She scored off a cross from another sophomore back, Sophia Spadano.

Elizabethtown padded its lead only 5:34 into the second half when sophomore forward Leigh Ungerleider scored at the doorstep near the left post. She was assisted by a cross from Lawson.

Barna drilled in a 25-yard free kick at the 82-minute mark to close the scoring.

Rutgers-Camden held slim edges in shots (12-11) and corner kicks (6-4). Eberhardt made three saves for the Scarlet Raptors, while freshman keeper Trinity Solo earned her first career win for the Blue Jays, making five saves.

The Scarlet Raptors return to action Wednesday when they host Washington (MD) College at 7 p.m.
