CAMDEN, N.J. (Sept. 28, 2019) – A career first, a program record-tying accomplishment and a fine comeback sparked the Rutgers University-Camden women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory here Saturday in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game against Kean University.
The Scarlet Raptors, who fell into a 1-0 hole only 4:13 into the game, rallied back on first-half goals by freshman midfielder
Lauren Bone and junior forward
Meghan Wachira as they won their second straight game.
Rutgers-Camden improves to 2-6 overall and evens its NJAC record at 1-1. Kean falls to 3-6 overall and 0-2 in NJAC play.
The victory was the third straight for the Raptors against Kean, but the Cougars hold a 14-5-3 lead in the all-time series.
Meghan Wachira's 13th game-winning goal tied the program's career record
Kean jumped on the board quickly when senior defender Deana Abdou sent a long restart to the left post early in the game. Midfielder Carley Garlasco, who had just entered the game to sub for an injured player, finished the play from close range, scoring her second goal of the season at 4:13.
Rutgers-Camden didn't take long to tie the game. Bone hit a 25-yard shot off the far left post and into the net for her first career goal, tying the contest at 6:54.
The Scarlet Raptors nearly took the lead four minutes later, but a long-range, high shot by freshman midfielder
Maggie Horn was deflected off the crossbar on a stellar, leaping save by Kean goalie Marissa Cook. Rutgers-Camden, however, found the net soon afterward when senior midfielder
Sarah Zuzulock threaded a ball into the box for Wachira, who beat Cook to the ball and scored her first goal of the season at 19:06. It proved to be the game-winning tally, allowing Wachira to tie the all-time program record of 13 game-winning goals, set by Heather Greenwald from 2001-04.
Both teams finished with seven shots, with the Raptors putting five of them on goal and the Cougars placing four on target. Cook and Raptor sophomore goalie
Natalie Eberhardt both finished with three saves.
Rutgers-Camden had the only three corner kicks in the game.
The Scarlet Raptors return to NJAC action Wednesday when they host one of the nation's top teams, The College of New Jersey, at 7 p.m. The Lions are currently ranked No. 7 in the United Soccer Coaches Div. III Top 25 poll and No. 5 in the
