CAMDEN N.J. (Oct. 21, 2021) – The Rutgers University-Camden men's soccer team spent much of the evening hovering around the Alvernia University goal in a non-conference game here Thursday night.
All that pressure was to no avail, and it was the Golden Wolves who countered to produce the lone goal of the game as Alvernia edged Rutgers-Camden, 1-0.
The win improves Alvernia to 11-4, while Rutgers-Camden falls to 7-7-2.
The teams have now met five times since 2016, with the series tied at 2-2-1. All four of the decisions have been 1-0 games, while the tie was a 1-1 deadlock.
Rutgers-Camden put plenty of pressure on the Alvernia defense throughout the game, holding a 15-6 advantage in shots, including an 11-4 margin in the first half. The Scarlet Raptors also had an 11-3 lead in corner kicks, including 7-0 after the break. All that pressure, however, was thwarted by either the Golden Wolves' defense or the stellar play of junior goalie Ben Solsky. The Alvernia keeper finished with eight saves, including several spectacular ones.
Late in the game, the Golden Wolves broke loose on a counterattack, with a pass by senior midfielder Braden Kreider leading sophomore forward Cameron Rowe into the left side of the box. Rowe slipped a shot just inside the near left post, threading the needle between the post and Raptor freshman goalie
Sean Boen.
Boen finished with four saves for the Scarlet Raptors, as Rutgers-Camden held an 8-5 lead in shots on goal.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Saturday at 7:30 p.m. with a big New Jersey Athletic Conference game at Rutgers-Newark.
