CAMDEN, N.J. (Oct. 23, 2021) – Junior defender Maria Miranda scored off a cross from sophomore forward Bailey Kellenberger with 2:51 remaining in the first overtime period to give the Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer team a 2-1 victory over Rutgers University-Camden here Saturday afternoon.
The win lifts the Scarlet Raiders to 9-4-3 overall and 2-4-2 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference, while the Scarlet Raptors fall to 5-8-2 and 3-4-1.
The victory snapped a two-game losing streak for Newark against its conference rival. Rutgers-Camden leads the all-time series, 14-4-3.
The loss was the fourth overtime defeat for the Scarlet Raptors, who also have tied a pair of overtime contests. It was their sixth defeat by one goal.
The Scarlet Raptors held an 11-4 advantage in shots in the opening half, which saw both Camden sophomore goalie
Kayla McKeever and Newark freshman keeper Katie McLaughlin each making a stellar save. Raptor freshman
Emily Owens also drilled a shot off the crossbar in the opening half, but it was Newark that found the back of the net. In the 23rd minute, senior Ana Silveira sent a pass up the right side for sophomore Tamia Howell in the corner. Howell crossed the ball along the goal line to Kellenberger, who tapped in her fourth goal of the year.
Rutgers-Camden finally scored the equalizer in the 76th minute when Owens took a tough-angle shot from the right of the goal, down by the end line. Her shot went into the far left panel for her second goal of the season.
Tied at 1-1, Rutgers-Newark got the winner when Kellenberger sent the ball from the left side along the goal line to the near post, where Miranda finished off her first goal of the season.
Camden ended up with a 14-11 advantage in shots, while Newark held a 5-3 edge in corner kicks. McLaughlin made eight saves in goal and was aided by a backsave, while McKeever had four saves for the Scarlet Raptors.
Rutgers-Camden closes its regular-season schedule with a 6 p.m. NJAC game at Rowan University Wednesday.
