BRYN ATHYN, Penn. (Dec. 14, 2021) – The Rutgers University-Camden women's basketball team spent a good portion of its time trying to rally from behind in a non-conference game here Tuesday night.
The Scarlet Raptors' efforts were time well spent.
Rutgers-Camden rallied from deficits as large as 12 points before finally catching and passing host Bryn Athyn College. The Scarlet Raptors won their second straight game with a 67-60 victory.
Rutgers-Camden improved to 2-8, while Bryn Athyn fell to 2-6 with its sixth straight loss.
The host Lions jumped to a huge 20-8 first-quarter lead before the Raptors rattled off 12 straight points, eventually tying the game at 20-20 early in the second quarter. Once again, however, a Bryn Athyn run put the Scarlet Raptors down, 33-29, at halftime and 41-33 midway through the third quarter.
Rutgers-Camden followed with an 11-3 run, tying the game at 44-44 with 2:37 left in the third quarter on a layup by senior guard
Tiazha Jackson. After falling behind again at 46-45, the Raptors took the lead for good on a three-pointer by junior guard/forward
Jalissa Pitts with 56 seconds left in the quarter. The trey by Pitts gave Rutgers-Camden the lead for good at 48-46, and also lifted her to 17 points on the night and 500 for her career.
Foul shots by freshman guard
Rahzirah Blocker and
Jalissa Pitts padded the Raptors' lead to 52-46 entering the final quarter. The fourth quarter featured six straight points by Jackson and the final nine Raptor points by Blocker to seal the victory.
Blocker finished with 23 points and four steals for the Scarlet Raptors, while
Jalissa Pitts scored 19 to hike her career total to 502. Jackson added 12 points. Blocker,
Jalissa Pitts and Jackson had three assists apiece, while
Jalissa Pitts and Jackson both had eight rebounds.
Freshman guard
Zhoei Travis added six points and sophomore guard
Jania Pitts notched five.
Freshman guard Norma Thornhill scored 18 points for the Lions and junior guard/forward Terrae Lewis added 13. Junior guard/forward Aida Barry grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
Rutgers-Camden shot 24-for-60 (40.0 percent) from the floor, while Bryn Athyn was 23-for-61 (37.7). The Scarlet Raptors shot 7-for-17 (41.2) from three-point range and the Lions went 7-for-20 (35.0). Rutgers-Camden also shot 12-for-16 (75.0) from the foul line, compared to Bryn Athyn's 7-for-12 (58.3).
The Lions held a 41-33 advantage off the boards and also made one more turnover (27-26) than the Scarlet Raptors.
Rutgers-Camden will close the month on Dec. 30 with a non-conference game at Arcadia University.
