Rutgers-Camden, Ramapo men open soccer season with 1-1 NJAC tie

CAMDEN, N.J. (March 10, 2021) – The New Jersey Athletic Conference season started seven months late due to the pandemic, but that didn't stop the Rutgers University-Camden and Ramapo College men from staging another highly-competitive battle in their strong NJAC rivalry.

The Scarlet Raptors and the Roadrunners played to a 1-1 tie in double overtime in a game where both teams had 16 shots, both made eight saves and either team could have walked away with a victory.

The draw leaves Rutgers-Camden with a 9-4-2 record in season openers under Head Coach Tim Oswald, who opened his 15th season at the Scarlet Raptors' helm needing one victory to reach the 200 milestone.

Both teams found the net after fouls set up perfect scoring opportunities. Ramapo scored late in the opening half when a Raptor foul set up a direct kick from just outside the penalty box. Sophomore Thiago Stallhbaum buried a shot inside the left post at 39:23.

Rutgers-Camden notched the equalizer early in the second half after senior forward Skyler Diggs was taken down in the box, earning a penalty kick. He took the shot and notched the tying goal only 6:58 into the second half. The goal was the 29th career tally for Diggs, who ranks eighth on the program's career list, one behind seventh-place Andrew Dorsey (2005-08).

Neither team managed the tie-breaking goal, but much of that credit went to Rutgers-Camden freshman goalie Connor Smith and his Ramapo senior counterpart Joshua Schaffer, who both produced several outstanding saves. Smith finished with eight saves, while Ramapo also hit the crossbar late in the second half. Schaffer had seven saves and was also aided by a key backsave.

Rutgers-Camden held a 9-7 edge in corner kicks, but Ramapo held a 3-1 corner kick advantage and a 5-3 shot advantage in overtime.

The Scarlet Raptors return to action at 1 p.m. Saturday when they host NJAC rival William Paterson University.
