JERSEY CITY, N.J. (March 17, 2021) – With the New Jersey Athletic Conference soccer season pushed back until March due to the pandemic, it took a few extra months for Rutgers University-Camden men's soccer Head Coach
Tim Oswald to add another milestone to his illustrious career.
That milestone came here Wednesday afternoon.
With the Scarlet Raptors' 2-0 victory over New Jersey City University, Oswald collected his 200th career victory. The win evens the Scarlet Raptors' season record at 1-1-1 overall and in the NJAC, while NJCU falls to 0-2 and 0-2.
Now in his 15th season with the Scarlet Raptors, Oswald owns a 200-85-39 career record, including four NJAC titles (2011, 2012, 2013 and 2015) and two other appearances in the NJAC championship game (2008 and 2014). He was named the NJAC Coach of the Year in both 2011 and 2013.
Entering the season, Oswald's .679 winning percentage placed him 31st among all active NCAA Division III men's soccer coaches. In addition to his NJAC championship appearances, Oswald has led his team to five NCAA tournament berths (2008, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2015), with his 2013 team reaching the Division III championship game before losing in double-overtime. He earned five separate Coach of the Year honors for that 2013 season, including the NSCAA Division III Coach of the Year.
During Oswald's tenure, Rutgers-Camden also has won four ECAC titles (2006, 2007, 2010 and 2014). The Scarlet Raptors also played in the 2017 ECAC championship game.
Oswald, who has been inducted into both the South Jersey Soccer Hall of Fame (2018) and the Southeastern Pennsylvania Soccer Hall of Fame (2019), has led his program to at least one post-season tournament berth in 13 of his previous 14 seasons, missing only in 2009.
Rutgers-Camden out-shot NJCU, 8-1, in the opening half and scored the only goal it needed at 30:09 when senior forward
Skyler Diggs finished off a through ball into the box from junior midfielder
Parker Solowey. It was the third goal of the season for Diggs, who has scored in all three of the Scarlet Raptors' contests.
The goal was the 31st career tally for Diggs, breaking a tie for seventh place on the program's all-time list and moving him to within two goals of sixth-place Brian Hobson (1995-99). It also was his 12th career game winner, tying Mike Zeno (1992-95) for third on the all-time list. The two points gave Diggs 67 for his career, moving him into eighth place on that program list.
Less than three minutes after scoring his goal, Diggs had a near miss when he struck a shot off the left post. The Scarlet Raptors hit another post early in the second half, as senior forward
Tyler Kazmierowicz hit the right post. This time, junior midfielder
Kaito Kitazawa was set for the rebound, tapping in the loose ball at the goal line. His first goal of the season came at 58:25.
Rutgers-Camden finished with a 13-6 advantage in shots, while NJCU held a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. Raptor sophomore goalie
Juan Bahena earned his first career shutout with two saves. Senior keeper Aldahir Cazun made four saves for NJCU and also was aided by a backsave before getting hurt in the 88th minute. Junior Nick Linebaugh finished the game in goal for the Gothic Knights without needing to make a save.
Rutgers-Camden returns to NJAC action Saturday with a 4 p.m. game at Stockton University.
