Top seed Stockton sweeps Raptors in NJAC semifinals

GALLOWAY, N.J. (March 23, 2021) – The fourth-seeded Rutgers University-Camden volleyball team made its first run to the New Jersey Athletic Conference playoff semifinals since 2012, when the Scarlet Raptors reached their only NJAC final in program history.

Unfortunately for the Scarlet Raptors, their semifinal opponent here Tuesday night was perennial NJAC power Stockton University.

The top-seeded Ospreys swept the Scarlet Raptors in three sets, 25-7, 25-12 and 25-17. Stockton (6-0) advances to host the NJAC title game Thursday night. Rutgers-Camden ends the abbreviated volleyball season at 3-4.

Stockton, the defending NJAC champion, has won nine of the last 12 conference volleyball championships and the Ospreys have never lost to the Scarlet Raptors in their 23 series meetings. They have swept Rutgers-Camden in 21 of them, with the Scarlet Raptors taking only two sets against Stockton in their history – one apiece in 2012 and 2015.

Stockton hit .550, had 12 kills and seven service aces while winning the opening set, 25-7. The Ospreys added 14 kills, four aces and hit .591 in the second set.

In the third set, Rutgers-Camden fell into a 15-6 hole before cutting its deficit to 17-14. Leading, 21-17, the Ospreys scored the final four points to wrap up their trip to the title match.

Senior middle hitter Charlotte Leon added eight kills with a .353 hitting percentage, while the Ospreys added seven kills apiece from senior middle hitters Franceska Gustave (who hit .750) and Julie Kohlhoff (.500).

Senior setter Emily Sullivan had 31 assists and five service aces for Stockton.
