MONTCLAIR, N.J. (Sept. 18, 2021) – The last time the Rutgers University-Camden and Montclair State University women's soccer teams played each other, the New Jersey Athletic Conference championship was on the line in the pandemic-shortened and delayed 2020 season.
The Red Hawks won that game, 1-0, in Camden on April 14, 2021.
The rematch occurred here on Saturday when both teams played their first NJAC game of the 2021 season, but the score didn't change as the Red Hawks edged the Scarlet Raptors, 1-0, shortly into the first overtime period.
Montclair State, which received votes toward the national Top 25 in this week's United Soccer Coaches poll, improves to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the NJAC. Rutgers-Camden falls to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in the conference with its third straight 1-0 overtime loss.
After another strong performance, which included several Rutgers-Camden chances in the second half, Montclair State scored only 53 seconds into overtime. Forward Zoe Steck tallied her fourth goal of the season, assisted by Paige Yocum.
Sophomore
Chloe Beasley played another strong game with seven saves in the Raptor net.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Tuesday when it travels to Messiah College for a battle with the nation's top-ranked Division III team.
