Rutgers-Camden men tie NYU in Stockton Classic opener

GALLOWAY, N.J. (Sept. 4, 2021) – Through its first two games this season, the Rutgers University-Camden men's soccer team has yet to concede a goal, and the Scarlet Raptors went overtime here Saturday in a 0-0 deadlock against New York University.

The game was the first contest of a pair of games on the opening day of the Stockton Classic. In the second game, host Stockton University routed Gwynedd Mercy University, 10-0.

On Sunday, the Raptors face Gwynedd Mercy at 1 p.m., followed by Stockton against NYU at 3:30 p.m.

Although NYU held an 11-4 advantage in shots against Rutgers-Camden, including all three of the shots in the two overtime periods, neither team could dent the scoreboard. The Scarlet Raptors had a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.

Sophomore Connor Smith made six saves, including one in the first overtime period, to secure his second shutout of the season for the 1-0-1 Scarlet Raptors. Smith has worked 200 minutes without allowing a goal so far this season, running his scoreless string to 208:59 dating back to his freshman year.

Luca Mancuso needed to make only one save for NYU, as the Raptors put only one shot on goal. It was a first-half shot by sophomore defender Quincy Attobrah.
