JERSEY CITY, N.J. (Oct. 1, 2022) – The Rutgers University-Camden men's soccer team has spent its season trying to clear the .500 hurdle, only to fall back below that mark.
The Scarlet Raptors finally jumped over that barrier here today in a key New Jersey Athletic Conference game as they blanked New Jersey City University, 1-0, Saturday afternoon.
With its second straight 1-0 NJAC victory, Rutgers-Camden improves to 6-5-2, cracking .500 in its fourth attempt to break the barrier this season. The previous three times resulted in one tie and two losses.
Most importantly, the victory lifted the Scarlet Raptors to 3-0 in the NJAC, temporarily, at least, putting them alone at the top of the conference pending results from 2-0 Montclair State and 2-0 Rutgers-Newark. Montclair State plays a night game Saturday, while Newark has a night game Sunday. It marks the Scarlet Raptors' first 3-0 NJAC start since 2015.
Rutgers-Camden, which posted a 1-0 win at Ramapo College on Wednesday, notched its second straight 1-0 road win in the conference despite being out-shot by the Gothic Knights, 16-8. NJCU held an 8-2 advantage in shots in the opening half, but the Scarlet Raptor defense, anchored by sophomore keeper
Sean Boen, held strong. Boen made four saves in the opening half and seven in the game to earn his second straight shutout.
Rutgers-Camden finally broke the scoreless deadlock with 8:50 remaining in the game on a goal by grad student forward
Michael Campbell. It was the first goal of his Rutgers-Camden career for Campbell, who joined the Scarlet Raptors this season. He also leads the team with three assists.
Rutgers-Camden held a 3-2 edge in corner kicks in the game. While Boen made seven saves, NJCU senior goalie Nick Linebaugh had two.
The Scarlet Raptors return to action Wednesday when they host Haverford College in a 7 p.m. non-conference game.
