CAMDEN, N.J. (Oct. 18, 2023) – The fast and furious action that is a typical game between two strong New Jersey Athletic Conference teams produced plenty of heart-stopping moments here Wednesday night.
When the teams finally reached the 90th minute, Stockton University escaped with a 2-1 victory over Rutgers University-Camden in a men's game that featured two vastly different halves.
Stockton, which dominated the opening half, improved to 9-2-5 overall and jumped past Rutgers-Camden in the NJAC standings with a 3-1-3 conference record. The Scarlet Raptors, who applied plenty of pressure on the Ospreys in the second half, fell to 8-5-3 overall and 3-2-2 in the NJAC standings.
Stockton moved into fourth place in the conference race, while Rutgers-Camden fell into a fifth-place tie with Rutgers-Newark.
The Ospreys applied plenty of pressure in the opening half, holding advantages of 7-3 in shots and 5-0 in corner kicks. They scored their first goal only 6:15 into the contest when junior forward Joseph P. Carbone drilled a shot from the right side of the box into the far left panel after receiving a feed from senior midfielder Antonio Matos.
Stockton added a second goal at 28:49 on a penalty kick by sophomore forward Aiden Hoenisch following a trip in the box.
The switch was flipped in the second half when Rutgers-Camden applied plenty of pressure on the Stockton goal. That pressure paid off in the 68th minute when a ball off the left post fell near the goal and was walked into the net by freshman forward
Rohan Castillo for his second goal of the season.
The Raptors continued the push for a tying goal, hitting one shot over the goal from the doorstep and nearly tying the game with 1:55 remaining when a hard shot by senior back
Quincy Attobrah was denied on a spectacular save by Stockton freshman goalie Brady Bartletta.
Bartletta finished with six saves in the game, while Scarlet Raptor junior keeper
Sean Boen had one save.
With a 10-2 advantage in shots in the second half, the Scarlet Raptors finished with a 13-9 advantage for the game. Stockton had a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Saturday when it hosts Montclair State University, the nation's 11th-ranked team, in a 1 p.m. NJAC game. Prior to the game, the Scarlet Raptors will recognize departing players on Senior Day, while Rutgers-Camden will hold a special 10-year reunion at halftime for its 2013 team which advanced to the NCAA championship game.
