GALLOWAY, N.J. (Oct. 18, 2023) – When the Stockton University women's soccer team scored a late goal to tie Rutgers University-Camden here Wednesday, junior midfielder
Josie Jackson-Conner had the perfect answer.
Jackson-Conner drilled a shot into the top left corner with seven seconds remaining to lift the Scarlet Raptors to a thrilling 2-1 victory over the Ospreys in a key New Jersey Athletic Conference game.
The win lifts the Scarlet Raptors to 8-6-1 overall and 4-3 in the NJAC, giving the Raptors their most wins since they won eight games during an 8-9-2 campaign in 2018.
Stockton falls to 7-2-7 overall and 1-2-4 in NJAC play.
The win was only the third ever for the Raptors against Stockton, which leads the all-time series, 19-3-5. Two of those victories, however, have come in the last five games, where the Scarlet Raptors are 2-1-2 against the Ospreys.
Rutgers-Camden scored the lone goal of the first half at 10:15, when junior midfielder
Hannah Crowley found the top right corner off a cross from Jackson-Conner. It was Crowley's first goal of the season and the third assist for Jackson-Conner.
The Scarlet Raptors had the statistical advantage in the opening half, holding a 7-2 edge in shots (3-2 in shots on goal) and a 5-2 margin in corner kicks.
Stockton applied plenty of second-half pressure in its bid for the equalizer and the Ospreys found it with 3:32 remaining. Junior forward Erica Dietz headed home a cross from sophomore forward Logan Shaw.
With time winding down, Jackson-Conner added the game-winning goal to her early-game assist. It was her fourth goal of the season and her team-leading third game-winning goal.
Stockton finished with a 13-11 edge in shots and a 9-8 margin in corner kicks. Raptor senior goalie
Kayla McKeever had an outstanding game with nine saves, while Stockton junior goalie Megan Brady finished with three saves.
The Scarlet Raptors close the regular season with a pair of nationally-ranked NJAC teams. They travel to #14 Montclair State University for a 1 p.m. game Saturday. In their final game of Wednesday, Oct. 25, they host The College of New Jersey, which is currently ranked #10 nationally.
