WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 30, 2023) – The Rutgers University-Camden softball team hadn't played in 10 days and had a 140-mile road trip to Catholic University of America here Thursday.
The Scarlet Raptors overcame the long journey, long layoff and cold weather, however, as they split a doubleheader against Catholic University of America. Rutgers-Camden won the opener, 2-1, behind sophomore pitcher
Lindsey Rodzon, before dropping the nightcap, 4-0.
The split leaves the Scarlet Raptors at 3-13, while the Cardinals stand at 12-8.
The Scarlet Raptors are scheduled to return to action Saturday when they host New Jersey City University in a 1 p.m. doubleheader to open their New Jersey Athletic Conference schedule.
Rutgers-Camden 2, Catholic 1
Rodzon allowed only one unearned run as she tossed a four-hitter to raise her record to 3-7. Coupled with 1.1 scoreless relief innings in the nightcap, she lowered her stellar ERA to 2.21.
Rutgers-Camden scored all the runs Rodzon needed in the fourth inning when the Raptors loaded the bases on singles by freshman first baseman
Bella Lynch and sophomore left fielder
Emily Dubiago, sandwiched around a fielder's choice by junior shortstop
Danielle Quinones that resulted in a throwing error to leave Lynch safe at second base. Senior right fielder
Jayden Hunter followed with a two-run single.
Catholic scored its lone run in the fifth inning on an error, a wild pitch and consecutive ground outs to second base, with sophomore right fielder Amanda Gomez plating the run.
Catholic senior Katie Hurd (4-4) allowed seven hits and two runs, only one earned, in her four-inning start. She didn't walk a batter and struck out four. Both Hunter and Lynch had two hits apiece for the Scarlet Raptors.
Catholic 4, Rutgers-Camden 0
Catholic earned the twinbill split by scoring one run in the third inning and three in the fifth to support freshman pitcher Aubrynn Arcement (4-2). She tossed a two-hit shutout, striking out three batters without a walk.
Raptor senior
Rachel White (0-6) took the loss, hurling 4.2 innings and allowing four hits, six walks and four runs, only three earned. She struck out four.
Arcement plated the only run she needed with a bases-loaded walk in the third inning. In the fifth, senior third baseman Sarah Spaeth doubled home two runs and later scored on a throwing error.
Hunter and Dubiago had singles for the lone Rutgers-Camden hits. For the day, Hunter went 3-for-7 and Dubiago went 2-for-4. Both players hit safely in the two games, with Hunter stretching her team-leading hitting streak to 10 games, while Dubiago extended her streak to seven games.
