MILL HALL, Penn. (April 29, 2023) – With the soggy weekend weather and the forecast of a downpour on Sunday, the United East Conference decided to play two rounds here on Saturday to complete the golf championships in one day.
After 36 holes at the Par 73, 6,781-yard Clinton Country Club, Penn College emerged as the United East champion, shooting a two-round total of 307-306—613. Rosemont College finished second at 313-315—628.
Rutgers-Camden finished fourth, one stroke behind Penn State-Abington, with a 321-313—634 total.
Josh Africa of Penn State-Harrisburg was the individual medalist with a 72-71—143 score.
Rutgers University-Camden senior
Patrick DeMareo finished fourth in a field of 44 golfers with a 75-73—148 total. In doing so, DeMareo captured United East First Team honors for the second straight year.
Freshman
Pearse Lee carded an 80-79—159 score for the Scarlet Raptors to tie for 12th place, while senior
David Gibson shot a total of 86-78—164 to tie for 23rd. Freshman
Reid Walker finished at 85-83—168, placing 27th, and senior
Ryan Lewbart carded an 81-91—172 score to tie for 28th.
For DeMareo, the United East Championships were the culmination of another terrific year in which he led the Scarlet Raptors at all four invitationals in the fall semester and all five events this spring. He averaged 77.3 in the fall and 75.1 this spring, leaving him with a 77.7 average in 31 rounds during his Rutgers-Camden career.
DeMareo was the medalist at the Stockton Invitational Oct. 10 and finished second at two invitationals this spring before placing fourth in the United East Championships. During his career he has been a five-time medalist.
DeMareo started his Rutgers-Camden career during the fall semester in 2019, but saw the spring and fall semesters in 2020 wiped out by the pandemic. Returning in the 2021 spring semester, when the Scarlet Raptors still played in the North Eastern Athletic Conference, he earned NEAC Second Team, NEAC Rookie of the Year and NEAC Scholar-Athlete recognition.

Since the Scarlet Raptors became a member of the United East Conference during the 2021-22 scholastic year, he has captured United East First Team honors during both spring semesters. He also was named to the United East All-Sportsmanship Team last spring.
In addition to golf this spring, DeMareo joined the men's tennis team midway through the season and posted a 2-2 singles record and an 0-3 doubles mark. He rose to as high as second singles in the Raptors' lineup.
DeMareo was a four-time All-Conference First Team golfer at West Deptford High School, while also lettering in soccer, winter track and spring track.
A Dean's List student as a Business major at Rutgers-Camden, DeMareo has been a member of the Rutgers-Camden Athletic Director's Honor Roll for all seven of his full semesters on campus. That honor for the spring semester will be announced later this month once all grades have been completed. On the 2022 Spring semester AD Honor Roll, he was one of only 26 athletes on the 119-member team to post a 4.0 GPA.
Rutgers-Camden was scheduled to play one last invitational on Monday in the Roadrunner Classic against junior college and club teams. The event, to be held at the Pitman Golf Course, was rained out Monday and will be held next Monday, May 8, at the same venue.
