ONEONTA, N.Y. (Sept. 10, 2023) – The SUNY-Oneonta women's soccer team scored on a first-half penalty kick and that was all the Red Dragons needed as they defeated Rutgers University-Camden, 1-0, in the championship game of the annual Mayor's Cup here Sunday.

Oneonta improved to 3-0-1, while Rutgers-Camden suffered its first defeat, falling to 3-1-1. In finishing as the tourney runner-up, Rutgers-Camden placed three players on the Mayor's Cup All-Tournament Team: juniors Emily Owens and Lindsey Rodzon and sophomore Maresa Savarese.

Oneonta scored just before halftime when a handball in the box gave the Red Dragons a penalty kick. Junior defender Shannon Lowney converted the shot at 40:31. It was only the second goal allowed by Rutgers-Camden this season, with both coming on penalty kicks during the two-day Mayor's Cup. On the first day Saturday, the Raptors overcame an early 1-0 deficit to beat Hartwick College, 3-1.

Both teams had six shots at halftime, with Oneonta holding a 4-2 edge in shots on goal and Rutgers-Camden having a 2-0 advantage in corner kicks. The Scarlet Raptors didn't allow a second-half shot while rolling up nine more of their own, including four on goal, but were held off the scoreboard by sophomore keeper Bryanna Meehan. Meehan made six saves in the game.

Senior tri-captain Kayla McKeever, making her first appearance of the season, had three saves for the Scarlet Raptors, while allowing only the penalty kick goal.

For the game, Rutgers-Camden held a 15-6 advantage in shots and a 3-1 margin in corner kicks.

The Raptors return home Wednesday for a 7 p.m. game against Washington College.
