CAMDEN, N.J. (Sept. 13, 2023) – The Rutgers University-Camden women's soccer team started its non-conference game with a bang here Wednesday, scoring one of the quickest goals in program history.
Unfortunately for the Scarlet Raptors, that was the only goal they managed, while Washington College junior Audrey Flanagan scored two of her own to lead the Shorewomen to a 2-1 victory.
Washington College improved to 2-1-1 with its second straight victory. Rutgers-Camden fell to 3-2-1 with its second straight loss.
The game had barely started when Raptor junior forward
Josie Jackson-Conner took a feed from junior
Emily Owens in the midfield and carried the ball down the right flank, where she sent a perfect cross to the far left post. Sophomore
Maresa Savarese finished off the play for her team-leading fourth goal, coming only 43 seconds into the game. The tally was only 13 seconds off the program mark of a 30-second goal, scored by Canice Leary against the College of St. Elizabeth on Oct. 24, 1998.
Midway through the half, Flanagan notched the equalizer, angling a shot from the top right side of the box into the top left side of the net. Her goal came at 19:08.
Flanagan struck again with the winning goal in the 59th minute after taking a feed from junior Emily Morris and drilling a shot from the top right of the box off the inside of the left post. It deflected into the net at 58:46.
Washington College held an 11-8 advantage in shots and Rutgers-Camden had a 4-3 edge in corner kicks. Sophomore goalie Hailey Sharpe made three saves to earn the win for the Shorewomen. Raptor senior tri-captain
Kayla McKeever had four shots in the Rutgers-Camden goal.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Saturday with a 12 p.m. non-conference game at Bryn Athyn College.
