Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Neal, Castillo spark Raptors to opening conference win

WAYNE, N.J. (Sept. 22, 2023) – Junior forward Khylei Neal collected a goal and an assist and freshman forward Rohan Castillo made his first career goal a game winner as the Rutgers University-Camden men's soccer team blanked William Paterson University, 2-0, in the New Jersey Athletic Conference opener for both teams Friday.

Rutgers-Camden raised its record to 6-2-1 overall with its third straight win, while William Paterson fell to 4-5. The Scarlet Raptors have won their last three meetings over the Pioneers.

After a scoreless first half in which both teams had six shots and one corner kick, Rutgers-Camden took charge in the second half, outshooting the host team, 9-2. The Scarlet Raptors made their pressure pay off only 7:07 into the second half when Neal angled a pass from the left flank toward the right post, where Castillo finished for his first career goal. It also was Neal's first career assist.

Neal added the insurance goal in the 81st minute, sweeping in from the left side and angling a shot inside the right panel. It was his first goal of the season and his third career tally.

Both Neal and Castillo now own three points on the season with one goal and one assist apiece.

Junior goalie Sean Boen, meanwhile, notched his fifth shutout of the season, making three saves. Boen owns all nine of the Scarlet Raptor decisions this season, while playing all but 11:59 minutes in goal. He owns a 0.90 goals-against average.

Rutgers-Camden finished with a 15-8 advantage in shots, including an 11-3 margin on goal. Both teams took two corner kicks.

Paterson graduate student goalkeeper Thomas Hatch finished with nine saves.

Rutgers-Camden returns to NJAC play Wednesday when it hosts Ramapo College at 7 p.m.
