Marini wins weight throw as Raptors compete at Ursinus meet

COLLEGEVILLE, Penn. (Jan. 20, 2024) – One day after watching a scheduled meet get wiped out by a snowstorm, the Rutgers University-Camden indoor track team set 21 personal records and watched Alexis Marini win the competition in the women's weight throw as the Scarlet Raptors competed in the Collegeville Classic here Saturday at Ursinus College.
 
Both Raptor teams finished 11th out of 13 programs, with the women collecting 11 points and the men scoring nine to tie with Lincoln.
 
Marini, a senior who has junior eligibility for indoor track, set her PR of 15.13 meters in winning the 25-woman competition in the weight throw. Freshman Kaitlyn Novak finished 15th in the event with a 9.19-meter throw.
 
Marini also finished ninth of 35 in the shot put (10.59 M), while Novak was 18th (9.08 M) and junior Francis Hill finished 19th (a PR of 8.85).
 
Freshman Lauren Carter finished 13th of 24 in the women's long jump (a PR of 4.71 meters), and set another PR with an 11.67 time in the 60-meter hurdles to place 13th of 15. Carter also led six Raptors in the 52-woman field of the 200-meter dash, finishing 13th in a time of 28.70. Freshman Sydnie Marshall finished 21st in the 200-meter dash (a PR of 29.68) and led four Raptors in the 28-woman 60-meter dash, finishing 18th with a PR time of 9.06.
 
Sophomore Isabella Bordon finished 17th of 35 in the women's 800-meter run (2:44.94) and 23rd of 38 in the mile (a PR of 6:01.96).
 
On the men's side, freshman Hector Diaz and sophomore Walter Pierce had standout performances in the 60-meter hurdles as they both qualified for the finals, finishing fifth (a PR of 8.87) and eighth (9.30), respectively, in the preliminaries. In the finals, Diaz finished sixth (8.87) and Pierce was seventh (9.04).
 
Freshman Nadir Paige tied his PR of 7.16 in the 60-meter dash in both the prelims (eighth of 36) and the finals (sixth of eight). The Raptors also received strong performances in the preliminaries from freshmen Robert Bayard (12th, 7.26) and Oluwamayowakun Ojutalayo (15th, 7.30).
 
Five Raptors ran in the 68-athlete field of the men's 200-meter dash, with Bayard finishing 11th (23.70), Paige finishing 16th (a PR of 23.90) and sophomore Brandon Butts winding up 38th (24.94). Butts also finished 16th
of 35 in the men's long jump (5.76 meters)
 
In the 32-athlete field of the men's shot put, both freshman Dyheim Watson and Aaron Le posted a PR as they finished 16th and 19th, respectively, with throws of 11.08 and 10.65 meters.
 
Rutgers-Camden returns to Ursinus College February 3 to compete in the Frank Colden Invitational.
